red wine
my eyes are stinging sweetly but severely
I have drunk a little more than two large glasses of red wine
and I feel a heavy cloud descending upon my head and body
my lips have closed my mouth for the past few minutes
I decide to move my lips and open my mouth
smack my tongue on the roof of my mouth
to see if I could still taste the sweet tenderness of the red wine
it still lingers
and I bathe in enjoyment
for the taste
hasn’t quite left
the buds of my tongue
my eyes are stinging sweetly but severely

today was not to be a memorable day
just another day that the hours passed by
not an unpleasant day
just another day that the hours passed by
not an unpleasant day
the sun was out now
its bright light shone down
upon me
I could feel its heat
on my skin
the heat felt good
only through squinting eyes
could I see
its white light
an excuse to close my eyes

today was a cloudy day
the wind was up
the sound of
an aeroplane could be heard overhead
a motorbikes engine in the distance
the slow purr of a car turning the corner
a buzzing fly that would not quit
the noise of the wind blew steady
it shook the leaves on all the trees, plants, hedges
and potted house plants that sat in the open window

it began with a brunch date at All The Shapes
a trendy little café by day, bar by night
a couple of hours later I was back in the mini
driving the distance back to Chorley
I entered the house and Alfie was there to greet me
he jumped up to say hello
excited and tail wagging

I walked into the woods today
further than I have walked before
I followed the footsteps of someone who has walked here before me
on my walk I saw the paw prints of an animal, a fox maybe?
and hoof prints, a deer maybe?
how amazing it would be, to see a wild animal in the woods
but I did not see any animals
just the road at the edge of the woods where the person before me had gone and led me there with their footprints
I turned around, as did the footprints I was following
into a new direction now
up past where I had come from
I came upon a yellow ribbon that was tied from tree to tree and so on
seemingly never-ending
I assume this is the border of our woods
the woods, which we are allowed to walk
I continued to walk for a while, still following the footsteps that had been here before me
I stopped at a tree that had fallen
now uprooted and exposed
from the place it had once grown
beneath its roots was ice
I crouched down for a closer inspection
my hand went out to touch it and a shard of ice broke off into my hand
now with both hands, I carefully lifted out a bigger piece of ice
more solid and thicker
it resembled the shape of a tombstone
and I placed it into the snow upright, not far from the uprooted tree

19.38 pm
I waited
as Matt, for the first time of the day
opened the curtains
he likes to
twist the curtain
around
and
around
so that it stays back
it holds itself
he does this, so the sun can come through the window
and reach all the plants
at the moment there are five plants that sit next to the window
he likes to move the plants
around
from the bedroom to the lounge and the kitchen

big blue van
big blue van
four wheeler
blue flashing lights
blues and twos
he always says
spaceship
towed by
old school, orange truck
slurp coffee
more horses
bird shit on the window
alfie on my lap
asleep
peanuts on the dashboard
wipers on
‘look at that weird campervan’

evening haze
the room fills with
bright sunlight
an evening haze
it floods in, through the
georgian windowpane
the dust-covered mirror
standing on the floor
reflects light beams
across the room
I close my eyes
and the light stays
and makes funny shapes

mum text me this morning
she said ‘I hope the painting goes ok’
I replied ‘ I was out on a works do last night,
I’m horrendously hung-over, I’m still in bed’
she said ‘You’re getting a bit too old for heavy drinking dear’
I said ‘Yeah I think I am’

I stare out the window
the wind blows
fiercely
fine snow
moving right to left
my fingertips are cold
and my skin is dry and wrinkled
today I woke again with not enough sleep

sometimes
it’s like a shower of water
water finds a surface
it gathers and collects
it forms a pool
the pool forms separate streams
and the streams run into
different directions
into each other
they separate again
they form again
